video How To Improvise A Mosaic Design Without Drawing

Morjo™ How to Mosaic Videos

I am producing a series of How to Mosaic Videos and have rebranded our Youtube Channel to Morjo Mosaic Tile™.

I have about 30 to 40 videos currently in production and will be publishing these in the coming weeks.

The mosaic video published today is:

HOW TO IMPROVISE A MOSAIC DESIGN WITHOUT DRAWING

Using Morjo™ Mosaic Tile

The transcript of the captions is below the video.

The night sounds are courtesy of Yalobusha Farms. You hear Cope’s gray tree frogs and barred owls.

How To Improvise A Mosaic Design Without Drawing
an example using Morjo™ Mosaic Tile

The surface Joe is using to lay up this design is a clear piece of contact paper taped down with the stick side up.
This keeps the loose pieces from sliding around.

Playing around with pieces is how Joe worked out a “vocabulary” of different flower shapes that could be built from standard cuts of tile.

What you should notice most about this video is how casually Joe can make changes with a temporary surface.

Joe is using four tools for this project: Mosaic Glass Cutter, Dental Pick, Tweezers, Sharpie Marker.

OOPS. Now Joe wants to make the vase darker.
No problem with a temporary surface!
It allows you to work by trial and error.

Look at how easy it is for Joe to make changes on the contact paper.

Notice the green plastic pan that Joe is using as a cutting basin.
It contains the slivers, dust, and pieces created by cutting.

This mosaic is being made only from standard cuts of tile, such as rectangles, triangles, polygons that are relatively easy to cut.

Joe is not attempting any details
that are smaller or thinner than the pieces he can easily cut.

If you are following a pattern and notice that the smallest details require you to make difficult cuts or impossible cuts where the glass falls apart, you have two options.

You can either increase the scale and make the mosaic larger,
or you can simplify the details in the pattern.

Joe is improvising this mosaic instead of working from a pattern.
By composing in the medium itself, I am avoiding the trap of drawing details too small to cut.

The complete mosaic design will be lifted off the temporary contact paper by spreading Mosaic Mounting Tape on the face of the mosaic. That is a separate video.
